How to make Sushi

I love Sushi! It is one of my all time favorite food in the world. The standard rolls are nowadays pretty affordable but because of the fish being expensive here the special rolls can be kind of pricy. This is why I decided to try it myself. This way I can save some money and also put everything I want in it:) And after doing it a couple of times, it is easy to do:)

Check the method below!

Avacado Roll

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 cup uncooked glutinous white rice (sushi rice)
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 4 sheets nori (dry seaweed)
  • 1 avocado – peeled, pitted and sliced

  1. Combine the water and rice in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, or until rice is tender and water has been absorbed. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar and a pinch of salt. Set aside to cool.
  2. Cover a bamboo sushi mat with plastic wrap to keep the rice from sticking. Place a sheet of seaweed over the plastic. Use your hands to spread the rice evenly onto the sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch of seaweed empty at the bottom. Arrange strips of cucumber and avocado across the center of the rice. Lift the mat and roll over the vegetables once and press down. Unroll, then roll again towards the exposed end of the seaweed sheet to make a long roll. You may moisten with a little water to help seal. Set aside and continue with remaining nori sheets, rice and fillings.
  3. Use a sharp wet knife to slice the rolls into 5 or 6 slices. Serve cut side up with your favorite sushi condiments.

California Roll

  • 2 cups sushi rice.
  • 2-3 nori sheets
  • 100gr Imitation crab stiks (Surimi)
  • Avocado
  • Cucumber
  • Black and/or white sesame seeds
  • *optional* Masago (Capelin roe)

How to make a California roll

  1. Wrap your bamboo mat with plastic wrap. This is necessary to prevent rice from sticking to the mat.
  2. Take a nori sheet, and break it in half. Place one half on the mat, with the shiny side facing down and cover with rice – about 1cm high.
  3. Flip the nori so that the rice is facing down and sprinkle some sesame on top of the rice.
  4. Line up the crab sticks.
  5. Next to it, line up a 1-2 cucumber sticks, and 1-2 avocado slices.
  6. Tip – if you’re not serving the dish immidately, you might want to squirt a few drops of lemon on the avocado, to prevent it from turning brown.
  7. If you choose to use Masago, you can now line up small trail of it on top of the filling.
  8. Roll, and cut!

Make sure all ingredients are equal in size and position, and roll. Afterwards, you might want to sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for decoration, either dark or light sesame goes well.

Best served with soy sauce.
