Paint Packs Powerful Punch For Pennies

With the new year upon us, are you ready for a little change, but all you have is a little change? Want to update a few things but can’t see past the old, outdated, boring furnishings? Never fear, paint is near. Yes, paint packs the most transformational power of any decorating tool ever… and for just pennies.

Painted furnishings are a hot commodity these days, but don’t be timid with the color, especially on furniture pieces that are tired, old and dated. It’s the bright gloss color that catapults these pieces from ho-hum to very cool and chic.

Let’s take a look. I love the violet console from Anne Coyle Interiors, above. How fun is this in an entry for a pop of color? Make sure to repeat a little of the color again in the space to unify the look.

How many of us have old hand-me-down dressers, buffets or consoles? Look what paint can do! The blue credenza from Cre8tive Designs and yellow dresser from 4 Men 1 Lady (above) show how a statement piece can brighten up a room. But the paint job is only as good as the surface preparation. So, make sure you sand, prime and then paint for longevity.

My daughter wanted some super cheap tables for her apartment. We found a thrift store deal and painted them up, all for under $30.

Now, you won’t believe this, but you can paint over upholstered furniture, like this great black and white reupholstered wing char from Martha Stewart. Using latex/acrylic paint and textile medium, you can paint right over the old upholstery with great results. Don’t believe me? Look at the before and after of Hyphen Interiors (above) and read their tutorial on how you do it. Cool, huh!

Since you’re in the painting mood, try your hand at painting some art. I wanted an abstract ocean scene and tried some “drip art.” It looks just fine in my guest room and the only cost was the frame.

Paint some art to repeat some of the room colors, like this pink and orange art, above. Buy some pre-made canvases and paint on some room color.

Try your hand at rug painting. Find an inexpensive tightly woven rug or piece of canvas to paint a super design using painters tape or Frog tape for perfect edges.

Don’t stop there! Paint those old brass or metal accessories with high quality spray paint made to paint metal, glass, plastic, etc. Do you have old lamps that could use an update? Take some inspiration from Heart Handmade UK and Mitzi’s Miscellany‘s DIY projects, above. Spray paint some color chic. Again, make sure you clean, and prepare the surface good before you paint. Add a contemporary shade.

So, are you ready to paint? Look around — furnishings are there just waiting to be rediscovered and brought back to life with your own creativity and… a can of paint.
